How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

PDFToolShack’s Add Page Numbers tool runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib.js. Your PDF is never uploaded — page numbers are stamped onto each page locally and the finished file downloads directly to your device.

Choose from six positions (top or bottom, left/center/right), five number formats (plain numbers, "Page N", "N of Total", and more), and fully customize the font size, color, and margin. If your document has a cover page or title page, check “Skip first page” and numbering will start on page 2 — but can still display as "Page 1" using the starting number control.

The live preview updates instantly as you change settings, so you can see exactly where the number will appear before applying to all pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Your file is loaded into memory, page numbers are stamped locally by JavaScript, and the result downloads directly to your device. Nothing is ever transmitted to any server.
How do I number a document that starts after a cover page?
Check the “Skip first page” option. Page 2 will receive the first number. Set the starting number to 1 if you want the second page labeled “1”, or to 2 if you want it labeled “2” — depending on your document’s convention.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Use the “Starting Number” control to set any starting value. This is useful when your PDF is a chapter or section that continues from a previous document — e.g. set starting number to 45 if this document follows pages 1–44.
Will adding page numbers affect the content or quality of the PDF?
No. Page numbers are added as a new text layer on top of the existing content. Nothing is re-compressed or re-rendered. The original content quality is completely preserved.
Can I remove page numbers I’ve already added?
Not with this tool — once applied and downloaded, the numbers are baked into the page. Always keep a copy of your original PDF before applying. If you need to re-do the numbers, start from the original file.
Does the “N of Total” format count the skipped cover page?
The “total” always reflects the number of pages that will be numbered. If you skip the first page, the total counts the remaining pages. So a 10-page PDF with page 1 skipped will show “1 of 9” on page 2.
