How to Extract Text from a PDF

PDFToolShack’s Extract Text tool uses PDF.js to read the text layer embedded in your PDF directly in your browser — no server, no upload, no account required. The extracted text appears instantly and can be copied to your clipboard or downloaded as a plain .txt file.

This tool works on text-based PDFs — documents created digitally in Word, InDesign, or similar software where the text is embedded as actual characters. It does not work on scanned PDFs where pages are images of text. For scanned documents, you’ll need OCR (optical character recognition) software.

Use Per Page mode to browse and copy text from individual pages, or All Pages to combine everything into one block for easy copying or download.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the extracted text empty or garbled?
This tool extracts embedded text from digital PDFs. If your PDF was created by scanning a paper document, the pages are images — there is no text layer to extract. You’ll need OCR software for scanned PDFs. Garbled text can also occur with PDFs that use custom or embedded fonts.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser using PDF.js. Your file is loaded into memory and processed locally — nothing is ever sent to any server.
Will the formatting be preserved?
Partially. Basic paragraph and line breaks are preserved, and page separators are inserted between pages. However, complex formatting like columns, tables, headers/footers, and text boxes may not extract in reading order. For clean Word-formatted output, you’ll need a PDF to Word converter.
Can I extract text from a password-protected PDF?
If the PDF requires a password to open, unlock it first with our Unlock PDF tool. PDFs with only permissions restrictions can usually be extracted directly.
How do I convert a PDF to Word instead?
Our PDF to Word converter is coming soon as part of Phase 2 tools. In the meantime, you can extract the text here and paste it into Word, or use Adobe Acrobat Pro for a fully formatted Word conversion.
Is there a page or file size limit?
No server-side limits since everything runs in your browser. Very large PDFs (hundreds of pages) may take a moment to process depending on your device. There is no file size cap.
