What is PDF Metadata?

PDF metadata is information embedded in the file that describes the document — separate from its visible content. Fields like Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords are used by operating systems, search engines, document management systems, and screen readers to identify and categorize PDF files.

The Creator field records the application originally used to create the document (e.g. Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign), while Producer records the software that generated the final PDF (e.g. Acrobat Distiller, pdf-lib). These can be edited to remove software fingerprints if needed.

Editing metadata doesn’t change the visible content of your PDF in any way — only the hidden property fields. This tool uses pdf-lib.js and runs entirely in your browser. Your file is never uploaded to any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does editing metadata change the PDF content?
No. Metadata fields are stored separately from the document content. Changing the title, author, or any other metadata field has no effect on the text, images, or layout of your PDF. The file size may change very slightly.
Why would I want to edit PDF metadata?
Common reasons: fixing incorrect author or title information on documents you’re publishing, adding keywords to improve searchability in document management systems, removing creator/producer fields that reveal internal software tools, or cleaning up metadata on PDFs before sharing externally.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser using pdf-lib.js. Your file is read locally, metadata is modified in memory, and the updated file downloads directly to your device. Nothing is transmitted to any server.
Can I remove metadata entirely?
Yes — use the “Clear All Fields” button to blank every editable metadata field before saving. The read-only date fields (created/modified) are set by the PDF standard and cannot be removed through standard metadata editing.
Why are some fields read-only?
The Created and Modified date fields are managed by the PDF specification itself. While technically editable at a low level, changing them can cause issues with document authenticity and digital signatures, so we display them as read-only information.
Will metadata survive if I print to PDF?
No — printing to PDF (using the system print dialog) creates a new PDF from the printed output and typically strips all metadata except what the print driver adds. To preserve metadata, open the edited PDF directly rather than reprinting it.
